The devil’s choices

Filed under: Political thoughts — theotheri @ 7:37 pm

I read an opinion today that Obama can’t withdraw our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and also get elected to a second term.

It had the ring of authenticity.

After initially supporting both wars, I have long been convinced that both wars are  possibly illegal, and arguably immoral.   Above all, they are unwinnable.

The question I am asking myself is whether Obama could get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan if he were willing to face the humiliation of being a one-term President.  And then if he could, should he?

When one considers Sarah Palin as the alternative, perhaps staying in Iraq and Afghanistan is the lesser of two evils.  I mean, seriously, perhaps it will do less harm to America and to the global community.

Speaking of the global community, I think Obama’s nuclear proliferation summit is immeasurably important.  Though I notice that Israel’s Netanyahu didn’t have the courage to attend.

That’s another one:  will Obama be able to take on Netanyahu and the American lobby supporting him?

I can only say that these questions seem so unanswerable that I obviously did not miss my calling by not becoming a politician.

  1. Say what you want about Sarah Palin. She stood up and took on conruption in her own party in a one party state, and she got it cleaned up. That took conviction and it took guts. I don’t suppose Mr. Obama had any opportunity to expose corruption in his home city of Chicago?

    Thanks for your post.

    • Thank you for your comment. I would be interested to hear how/when Sarah Palin cleaned up corruption in Alaska. Your perspective is a new one to me, although I was aware that Palin had been accused herself of corruption when she was governor.

As an American living in another country, I’ve become aware how many subtle signals are sent by politicians that are missed or misinterpreted by outsiders – even well-informed outsiders. My English husband quite frequently interprets for me what are sometimes called “dog whistles” here in England. Dog whistles are messages, often prejudiced or chauvinist, which only those who know the culture can understand.

For myself, when I heard Palin say she did not believe in global warming, and that Africa was a single country, I’d heard enough to decide she is not what America should be looking for as our president. You will no doubt, however, find many Americans who agree with your assessment and I mean it when I say I would be interested to hear the source which claims that Palin cleaned up Alaskan politics.

Thank you again for your comment.

      • If you will do a Google search on “how palin beat alaska’s establishment”, you will find a Sep 5, 2008 Wall Street Journal piece telling you how she took on corruption (and won) in her own party. Best wishes.

      • I’ve read the article in the WSJ you suggest and I agree with you: you have to admire Palin’s guts. I still disagree with her fundamental philosophy, but she is not just a ditsy “soccer mom.” For me, that makes her scarier, and I am afraid of what she is appealing to in so many Americans. But as you suggest, she’d better be taken seriously.

Thank you for answering my question. I thought you weren’t going to bother, and I appreciate your taking the time. I don’t always like having my opinion changed, but the alternative to not learning anything too uncomfortable is too often bigotry, so I try to face the unhappy reality that I’m not always right.

  2. Sarah Palin is very attractive and gutsy. As a member of Defenders of Wildlife I would like to see her gutsily running for her life while gunshots are aimed at her from an airplane or helicopter. But until this happens, how about just firing her inept speechwriter who thought it would make good copy to have her see Russia from her house? …
