The Other I

Wonderful blog!

It’s nice to get encouragement to keep blogging, but in the last several months, I have been getting an awful lot of what seem to be generic comments telling me what a great blog this is.

I’m beginning to get suspicious.  Is this a way of getting a general approval to make comments following my posts and so to get spam past the spam-screen?

The psychologist R. D. Laing described people who do not believe in themselves and so conclude that anybody who offers them a positive assessment must be either very needy themselves or very poor judges of character.

On the other hand, maybe I’m just getting cynical in my old age.  As we used to say during the Vietnam War protest years, “Just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean people aren’t out to get me.”

  1. as an editor of a newsletter with a readership of about 500, i sympathize – even when asking for criticism – anyolekind and eschewing constructive criticism, what is received is bland. takes less effort to say “its great – its fine” not necessary to substantiate why one is saying that, thinking the reasons obvious. not that it is mandatory when the comments are negative, but perhaps subjectively the writer feels that data is required to substantiate the criticism. perhaps it requires too much effort – and it is easier to quit the readership without comment. on the other hand, your blog is awesome and often so well laid out, i have nothing to add or what i might contribute would be lame, redundant or just pitiful. you can take this as you need to. but don’t put your interpretation on to me! k

    • Thank you. Seriously. I will be sure to avoid putting my interpretation on to you. Anyway, I would never mistake your comments for some nefarious attempt to sneak spam onto my blog. (If I did, I wouldn’t try to stop them anyway – they are invariably too interesting.)

  2. I’ve also had an increase in spam compliments. Usually their name is a giveaway: Eco cigarettes etc.

Your blog is, of course, great. It’s one “failing” is that it makes me want to think, and I rarely have time to sound the depths of my subconscious to figure out what I think in response to some of your posts.

But I enjoy the thinking when I get around to it.

    • Yes, I agree some “compliments” are giveaways. But some seem to come from quite non-commercial individuals. Your comments, on the other hand, are always sincerely appreciated. And have often stimulated and helped clarify my own thoughts. So when I say thank you, it is not with tongue in cheek.
