A complex arithmetic challenge

Five-year-olds may be taught algorithms in school today, but there clearly is something wrong with the mathematical reasoning of shoppers.  Or how stupid the supermarkets seem to think their shoppers are.  I have come across several of these signs in our local supermarkets, but did not appreciate how widespread they were.

Here are some examples recently posted by Which?  (In case you think you are simply confused by the currency, yes, there are 100 p in 1£ in the same way there are 100 cents in each $.)

Daft deals: Daft deal in Sainsbury's in Sheffield Daft deals: Daft deal in Waitrose in Cheltenham   Daft deals: Daft deal in Tesco in Clearwater Shopping Centre in Dublin

Daft deals: Gap in Nottingham  Daft deals: Daft deal in the Guardian Daft Deals 051111: Wine offer in Morrisons, Newcastle           Daft Deals 051111: Squeegee deal in Asda, Newcastle      Daft Deals 051111: Sausage rolls deal in Makro, Reading    Daft Deals 051111: Runner bean deals in Tesco, Blairgowie, Perthshire      Daft Deals 051111: Pomegranate deal in Tesco, Stroud Green, London   Daft Deals 051111: Cotton wool deal in Superdrug, Brighton           Daft Deals 051111: Crusty rolls deal in Sainsbury's in Kenilworth, Warks

One shouldn’t need algorithms or be bi-lingual in texting to see the problem.

On the other hand, maybe anyone who thinks these are bargains should try to find a five-year-old to take along shopping next time.
