Ongoing story of computer dysfunction

Filed under: Just Stuff — theotheri @ 3:46 pm

The complications of my computer dysfunction continue.  I would use system restore to return to an earlier stage when life was simpler, but I’m afraid that I could end up delaying the publication of The Big Bang to Now indefinitely as an unintended result.

The latest glitch is that I can’t comment on anybody else’s posts who are blogging on WordPress.

I’m think I might break down and replace Windows XP and start with a fresh slate with Windows 7.  Microsoft is going to stop supporting XP next year, and I hope I won’t live long enough to have to adopt to the world currently being rolled out in beta form in Windows 8.  I will hate it.

This can’t go on forever.

It just feels like it at the moment.

And it’s interfering with my blogging.  Talk about deprivation.

  1. Restoring the computer to an earlier date shouldn’t affect any data files, Terry. You have backup copies in any case, ya? And you should have the option to undo the restore if you want to afterward. Most people, you know, consider XP the best OS Microsoft has come out with. I still have it on one of my older computers, though I believe you’re right about MS not supporting it.

    • Tom – Thank you for the reminder about using system restore. After “Reboot,” it has been my first recourse ever since Microsoft realized that people sometimes make mistakes or change their minds or even sometimes don’t know what they are doing. I started on computers when they came with a DOS manual.

In this case, however, the problem has been a little more complex because I installed additional software after the offending software had been downloaded. At this point, I have solved everything except that I still cannot comment on other WordPress blogs. (I have one saved that I wrote to PianoMusicMan but couldn’t get to register in response to your last post.)

Ultimately I will break down and buy a new computer with Windows 7. In the meantime, I’m getting to know a lot of computer wizards who live in Delhi, and who keep wishing me “Good Karma.”

  3. How annoying! This makes me realize, again, how much agony I escape because I work on a Macintosh. My best friend finally just switched over from the PC world, and it’s been like retiring and moving to Bali. I hope you manage to sort out the remaining difficulty–and what a strange symptom that is. Have you tried working with the WordPress Happiness Engineers? (And now that I type that, I think: what a job title! And where can I hire one to retool my life!)
