That wonderful noise

Filed under: Just Stuff — theotheri @ 7:49 pm

I think one might need a certain kind of courageous craziness to build a car factory made of glass.

Ron Dennis says he sometimes drives himself absolutely bonkers with his ideas.  But he’s built a glass car manufacturing factory designed by the world-famous architect Norman Foster.

When you listen to him explain it, it actually doesn’t sound as crazy as it sounds at first.

“Glass,” he says, “is either perfect or it’s broken.  If you have metal panels and somebody bashes into one, you have to decide whether to replace it or not.  If glass is broken, it makes this wonderful noise and everyone comes running and everyone knows who did it.  The result is that people are careful and the building doesn’t have all the dents and scuffs that you usually get and we save money on repairs.”

Hmmm.  Nobody ever says that to me when I make that wonderful noise.
