Five-year-olds may be taught algorithms in school today, but there clearly is something wrong with the mathematical reasoning of shoppers. Or how stupid the supermarkets seem to think their shoppers are. I have come across several of these signs in our local supermarkets, but did not appreciate how widespread they were.
Here are some examples recently posted by Which? (In case you think you are simply confused by the currency, yes, there are 100 p in 1£ in the same way there are 100 cents in each $.)


One shouldn’t need algorithms or be bi-lingual in texting to see the problem.
On the other hand, maybe anyone who thinks these are bargains should try to find a five-year-old to take along shopping next time.
